Netflix Tags New High On New Streaming Deal
Agustino Fontevecchia, 11.22.10, 2:05 PM ET
Netflix stock nailed an all-time high of $187.80 Monday morning as the movie-rental service announced plans to intensify its pursuit of more customers through providing streaming of unlimited TV shows for $7.99 a month.
The announcement, made through the Netflix official blog, sent the company's stock flying to the upside, gaining $13.82 or 7.6% by early afternoon. The company will also raise prices for its two most popular plans, one and two DVD at a time plans, by $1.
"We are now primarily a streaming video company delivering a wide selection of TV shows and films over the internet," said Netflix CEO and co-founder Reed Hastings, according to Bloomberg. The official explanation hints at the company's strategy of moving away from the costly mail DVD delivery model, and towards online streaming, a business with higher margins.
"The fact is that Netflix members are already watching more TV episodes and movies streamed instantly over the Internet than on DVDs," read the announcement, "and we expect that trend to continue."
Netflix recently announced a partnership with Level 3 Communications, a move to expand its online content delivery capacities. The announcement explained that their online library has "grown dramatically," and that no new DVD by mail plans has been announced. "We're spending the vast majority of our time and resources" creating "the best user experience," said the blog post.
Online video is the new frontier for entertainment and Netflix has focused on taking advantage of that trend by delivering content through a variety of platforms. Their service is available through gaming consoles like Microsoft's Xbox, through streaming players like Apple TV, and through mobile devices such as the iPhone, the iPad, and smartphones carrying Google's Android operating system.
Shares in Netflix were amongst the strongest performers in early trading in Monday, as Irish sovereign debt woes depressed equity markets.

What people say:
"Like a lot of people who use Amazon, I own all kinds of electronic gear. Every once in a while, you get your hands on a device that really stands out in terms of ease of use and performance. When I first hooked up my Slingbox, for example, I realized that it was unique and was going to add something truly useful and impressive to my audio-video set-up. When I read a description of the Roku box, I had a similar expectation. Could it be as easy to use as advertised? Would it perform on a level that would really satisfy? Would it be one of those "stand out" devices? Now I can say in all honesty that the Roku player is everything I hoped and more. When the description says you will be up and running in just a few minutes, you can believe it. I opened the box, plugged in the power cord, attached a cable to my high speed router, and ran audio to my amp. I turned everything on and immediately saw the set-up screen for the Roku player. To run a quick test, I tried streaming a video from Netflix--it worked perfectly. This initial set-up and test took no more than 10 minutes. After several days of using the Roku, I have yet to have even the slightest problem. I have added a couple dozen channels and all work as expected. My only moment of hesitation came when I saw how small the Roku player is. It is tiny sitting there with all the other components, but when I saw what it could do, the size became inconsequential. The Roku player truly is an impressive device. While not necessarily a replacement, the Roku XDS Streaming Player is another serious alternative to cable TV. By the way, for those traveling outside the USA, where Netflix does not allow the streaming of movies on your PC, there is a way to connect the Roku player to your Slingbox. You then have access to Netflix through the Roku wherever you have an internet connection."
"I have been looking for an alternative to cable/satellite for awhile. The ROKU XDS is the closest thing to it. With the support of Netflix streaming(some episodes even in HD), and with Hulu plus coming in the fall, the ROKU XDS is all my family needs. Also, if you look at the ROKU forums, developers are creating other private and premium channels. This is something that Apple.tv cannot do. They also mention on their website that with an update in November you will be able to play video off USB. Setup took only minutes and the picture in awesome on my 1080P LCD. The only draw back would be if you watch a lot of sports, currently they only have MLB.tv. As soon as Hulu Plus is added I will be dropping my $90/month satellite bill and pay $20 a month for Hulu and Netflix."

Tangled- The amazing Disney film
Get Tangled DVD Combo: Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copyat this link Tangled (Four-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy)
Disney's 50th full-length animated feature film, Tangled is a visually appealing, music-filled adventure full of romance and humor. The movie focuses on Rapunzel, a girl with long magical hair who's lived her entire life imprisoned in a tower by her greedy mother. Naturally optimistic and acquiescent, Rapunzel (Mandy Moore) rarely complains about her circumstances, but for her 18th birthday she longs to leave the tower to see the floating lights that appear every year on her birthday. Her mother (Donna Murphy) refuses her request, but when thief Flynn Ryder (Zachary Levi) climbs the tower to escape his pursuers, Rapunzel (once she's conked him on the head with a skillet multiple times) impulsively decides to trust the young man and convinces him to help her escape to see the floating lights. Thus begins a journey that alternates quite schizophrenically between optimistic excitement and guilty remorse that will ultimately change Rapunzel's and Flynn's lives forever. Tangled is a masterful blend of humor, adventure, passion, and drama combined with a great musical score and top-notch animation. The Real 3-D effects add to the experience but probably won't really be missed in other formats. Best of all, Disney presents a princess who matures from a meek and compliant girl into a spunky young woman who's not afraid to pursue her dreams and risk it all for love--now that's a Disney princess worth emulating. (Ages 6 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

"Tangled is an amazing movie! The story is very well written and the pace of the movie never gets boring. Alan Menken's score is breathtaking! Easily one of my favorite Disney movies of ALL TIME, and I grew up in the second golden age of The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty And the Beast, ect.
I have seen the movie twice in the theater. I cannot recall EVER going to the see a movie a second time in the theater. I actually might see it again in 3D as it was stunning! Also One of Disney's best villains also in my opinion. The psychological aspect of Mother Gothel is deep.
Don't miss this new age Disney classic. Perfect for everyone in your family. It will warm your heart, make you laugh and cry and gives you that Disney magic feeling we have been waiting for since Beauty and the Beast! Amazing!!
I cannot wait for this to come out on Blu-Ray. I even thought about getting a 3D tv..Yeah this movie was that good in 3D for me...haha "
"I'll leave you with a list of random aspects of Tangled that I loved!
-Rapunzel, herself! She's so adorable! I can't handle it! Most adorable Disney princess, hands down. So much spunk. So much personality.
-The animation! So fluent! So lively! It's amongst the liveliest CG animation I've ever seen. The characters faces have so much personality. So much expression. And the mouths! I kept staring at their mouths. I've never seen CG mouths move so beautifully. It kind of blew my mind.
-The gags! Oh, such gags! The funniest five seconds of my year involved Tangled and a horse eating a piece of paper.
-The sidekicks! Come on, animal sidekicks make any animated movie better! Maximus and Pascal will stick with me for some time.
-The songs and music! God, I didn't realize just how much I missed Alan Menken's music. So delicious. So timeless.
-The colors! So much lavender...
-The pacing! This movie was paced PERFECTLY!
-Enough is left up to the imagination! We're given backstory, but it's not shoved in our faces. I think anyone over the age of 15 will be able to piece together some pretty deep backstory for the characters, and anyone under that age probably won't care if the characters come across a little flat.
-Glen Keane! Although it's 3D, it's incredibly obvious how much influence Disney animator Glen Keane had on the visual look of this movie. I kept seeing Glen Keane facial expressions popping up on all the characters! Especially on Maximus, the horse.
-The voice actors are also the singers! No double-casting here."
